US proposes security guarantees to Ukraine

This proposal was put forward by American negotiators during Monday's talks in Berlin, the capital of Germany, and in a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine. However, the American side warned that such guarantees would not be permanent.


Meanwhile, American and European negotiators have reported progress in the talks aimed at ending Russia's war against Ukraine; however, no agreement has yet been reached on territorial concessions.


Donald Trump, in a speech at the White House following a phone call with participants in a dinner banquet for key officials in Berlin, spoke about efforts to end the war, saying: "We are trying to get this done."


He added: "We have had numerous conversations with President Vladimir Putin, and I think we are closer to an agreement now than ever before. We'll have to see what we can do."


European leaders welcomed the Trump administration's shift in position regarding the provision of security guarantees to Ukraine. Friedrich Merz, the Chancellor of Germany who hosted these meetings, wrote in a post on the social network X: "For the first time since the start of the war, the possibility of establishing a ceasefire has become conceivable."


Nevertheless, Moscow has so far not agreed to any of the proposals or changes raised at the Germany summit and has shown no sign of willingness to accept them.

The United States announced on Monday, December 15, that it is prepared to provide Ukraine with security guarantees similar to those of NATO.
