Journalist crackdown; Taliban claim no journalists are detained in Afghanistan

This Taliban official claimed in an interview with the Bangladeshi newspaper *Prothom Alo* that since the Taliban’s return to power, not even one journalist has been killed or imprisoned.


Meanwhile, organizations defending press freedom say that at present, at least several journalists are still being held in Taliban prisons, and Afghanistan has become one of the worst countries for journalistic activities. Reporters Without Borders has announced that since the Taliban’s renewed takeover, more than 165 media workers have been detained, some of which relate to the year 2025.


The organization *No Exile* has also described Afghanistan as the most dangerous country for journalists, pointing to the severity of censorship and repression, and says that domestic media have turned into propaganda tools for the Taliban.


The Taliban’s Deputy Minister of Culture, in defense of media restrictions, stated that freedom of expression is not absolute in any country and that media in Afghanistan must adhere to the frameworks set by this group.


Following the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, a large number of journalists have been forced to flee Afghanistan. Reporters Without Borders says that in 2025, Afghanistan had the highest number of journalists in need of emergency assistance among countries worldwide.

The Taliban’s Deputy Minister of Information and Culture says that currently no journalists are detained in Afghanistan and that this group has no issue with media activities.
