Two Afghan journalists released after 10 months in Taliban prison

According to this center, these two journalists were arrested in Kabul on the 30th of Dalo last year by Taliban intelligence and were tried on charges of "propaganda against the Taliban regime."


The Taliban's Supreme Court, in the absence of defense counsel, had sentenced these two journalists to 10 months in prison on the 4th of Hamal this year, which the Journalists Center has called unjust.


During the detention, the Rasa TV office was closed, and media equipment, including computers from this outlet, was confiscated. Rasa TV, which was launched in Kabul in 1398, primarily produced social and daily reports and still does not have permission to resume operations. The Afghanistan Journalists Center has asked the Taliban to allow this media outlet to reopen.


This institution has also emphasized that at least five other journalists and media activists in Afghanistan remain in detention, and some of them have been sentenced by Taliban courts.


Meanwhile, Mohajer Farahi, the Deputy Minister of Publication of the Taliban Ministry of Information and Culture, recently claimed in an interview with the Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo that there is currently no journalist in detention in Afghanistan.


The release of these two journalists has been welcomed by media institutions; however, restrictions on media outlets and the detention of journalists continue to raise serious concerns about press freedom in Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center announced that Ghulam Mohiuddin Sahibzada, the responsible manager, and Jihadmal Habibi, a reporter for the private Rasa TV, have been released after approximately 10 months of imprisonment in Bagram prison.
