Afghan protester Shirin Hazara dies in Australia

Her family, on Sunday, 19 Dalu, confirmed the death of this civil activist to the media and announced the cause of her death as a "cerebral stroke." This event has sparked a wave of grief and reactions among women's rights activists, civil society actors, and Afghanistan's cultural community both inside and outside the country.


A number of protesting women and civil activists, expressing concern over Shirin Hazara's sudden death, have emphasized that the physical and mental condition of Afghan women activists has become extremely vulnerable as a result of ongoing pressures, threats, and the Taliban's systematic repression.


According to them, such deaths cannot be considered separate from the direct consequences of years of violence, forced migration, and political and social pressures.


Hoda Khamoush, a prominent figure in the women's protests, has stated in response that the Taliban's widespread repression against women and civil activists has left deep and irreparable impacts on their health, and the international community must not remain indifferent to this reality.


Shirin Hazara had sought refuge in Australia about four months ago. She had previously also been a victim of violence, and in the year 1397 (2018), following a suicide attack on a civil gathering in Kabul city, she was severely injured—a wound whose effects lingered on her life for years.


The passing of this protesting woman has once again drawn attention to the dire situation of Afghanistan's protesting women and the heavy costs they pay in the pursuit of freedom, justice, and human dignity. Human rights activists have called for serious attention from international institutions to the security, health, and psychological support of Afghan women activists in exile.

Shirin Hazara, one of the first protesting women who, after the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, joined street protests against the extensive restrictions on women, has suddenly passed away in Australia.
