Human Rights Watch: Taliban steps up repression of Afghan women and girls in 2025

This report, published on Wednesday, 15 Dhu al-Qadah, emphasizes that the Taliban imposed stricter and more pervasive restrictions on the lives of women and girls throughout 2025. At the same time, the reduction in international aid and the forced return of millions of migrants have severely worsened Afghanistan's humanitarian situation.


Fereshta Abbasi, a researcher on Afghanistan at Human Rights Watch, stated that governments must apply effective pressure to end the Taliban's "abuses" and, at the same time, expand support for Afghan refugees and humanitarian aid. According to her, the Taliban's ongoing repression should compel the international community to make a serious effort to hold the perpetrators of serious crimes in Afghanistan accountable.


The report states that in 2025, more than 22 million people in Afghanistan faced the risk of food insecurity, and women and girls have disproportionately suffered the most harm.


Human Rights Watch has also stressed that no country should forcibly return Afghan citizens who face risks of persecution, pursuit, or life threats. This organization has called on United Nations member states to support the creation and funding of a new investigative mechanism to examine the situation in Afghanistan.


These findings are published as part of Human Rights Watch's World Report 2026.

Human Rights Watch has announced in its annual report that the systematic suppression of women and girls in Afghanistan by the Taliban intensified in 2025, while the humanitarian crisis in the country deepened simultaneously.
