Turkish police arrest dozens of Afghan refugees off Turkey's west coast

According to the released information, during operations by coastal forces in Çanakkale province, a total of 39 Afghan refugees, 17 of whom were children, were identified and detained.


According to this report, the operation took place in the Eceabat district, and simultaneously, another individual was detained by Turkish security forces on charges of involvement in human smuggling. It is said that these individuals intended to be transported to other areas via illegal routes.


Turkish media have reported that the detained refugees lacked legal residency documents and, after completing initial procedures, were transferred to the migrant detention center in Eceabat to decide on their fate.


Meanwhile, the Turkish government has intensified monitoring of illegal migration in recent months and accelerated the process of identifying, detaining, and deporting refugees who entered the country through smuggling routes.


According to statistics released by the Turkish Migration Directorate, in 2025 alone, more than 44,000 Afghan migrants without legal documents have been detained across the country. Reports also indicate that in the first two weeks of this year, more than 1,500 Afghan refugees have been identified and apprehended by Turkish security forces.


According to these statistics, Afghan citizens constitute the largest number of detained refugees in Turkey; a situation that has raised widespread concerns about the humanitarian conditions of Afghan migrants in the country.

Turkish security officials have reported the detention of dozens of Afghan citizens, including children, in one of the coastal regions of the country.
