Hamid Karzai: Afghanistan's independence cannot be preserved by depriving girls of education

Mr. Karzai wrote on the social network X on Wednesday, August 19, that creating a trained human resource force is only possible when all children of Afghanistan, regardless of gender, have access to education and schooling. In recent years, he has repeatedly urged the Taliban to provide opportunities for girls to return to educational centers.


The former president also emphasized that unity among the people is strengthened when a shared sense of ownership toward the country and a belief in a common destiny take shape in society. According to him, Afghanistan can pursue the path of progress by relying on national cohesion and capacity.


Karzai added that strengthening national cohesion can also improve Afghanistan's standing in the international community and transform this country into a responsible member enjoying a deserved and respected position on the global stage.


This year marks the 107th anniversary of Afghanistan's independence from British colonialism, an independence achieved during the era of King Amanullah Khan. The Taliban have commemorated this occasion in recent years; however, their treatment of symbols associated with independence and the national flag has been met with criticism, and in some cases, young people have been arrested for raising or posting the national flag on social media.

Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, stated in a message marking the anniversary of the country's independence that safeguarding independence and making proper use of it depends on achieving lasting peace, national unity, and providing educational opportunities for all children, both girls and boys.
