Ashraf Ghani: Taliban must be held accountable for repeated deadly floods in Nuristan

Expressing condolences to the victims' families, Ghani emphasized that citizens have the right to ask what lessons have been learned from similar incidents, including the Kunar floods, and why preventive measures to prevent the repetition of these disasters have not been taken.


He added that while some may consider such questions beyond the people's rights, these questions remain valid and require accountability from officials.


The deadly flash floods on Monday in Nuristan Province caused significant loss of life and widespread damage. According to reports, among the deceased are several local Taliban officials, including the mayor of Parun, and hundreds of homes, infrastructure, and agricultural lands have been destroyed.


He claimed that while Pakistan has implemented extensive programs for forest development, timber smugglers "in collusion with internal mafias" continue the widespread logging of forests in Kunar and Nuristan.


The former president of Afghanistan also identified climate change and the destruction of forests in Kunar and Nuristan as factors exacerbating the floods, calling for an end to tree felling, the implementation of extensive tree-planting programs, and the participation of citizens, traders, and Afghan expatriates in aiding the affected individuals.

Ashraf Ghani, the former president of Afghanistan, criticized the Taliban's performance in managing the deadly flash floods in Nuristan, stating that this group must answer to the people regarding the recurrence of such events and the lack of preparedness to mitigate their consequences.
