Former British security minister calls for Afghan veterans to join her country's army

According to Tugendhat, stringent citizenship laws have hindered the utilization of Afghan military personnel's capabilities; even though many of them hold permanent residency permits in the UK.


Under current laws, only British citizens can apply to join the army—a process that takes at least several years.


This request comes at a time when the British Army is facing a shortage of personnel, and the number of individuals leaving the force exceeds those being recruited.


Meanwhile, a number of Afghan veterans residing in the UK say that, despite their military and security backgrounds, they have been forced to take on menial jobs.


Noor Aziz Ahmadzai, one such individual, told Sky News that many former Afghan military personnel, despite their expertise in sensitive areas such as counterterrorism, lack opportunities to utilize their skills.


Nevertheless, some experts warn that recruiting Afghan military personnel into the British Army carries security and political implications and may provoke sensitivities—a matter that has led to caution on the part of the UK Ministry of Defence.

Tom Tugendhat, the former UK Security Minister, has called on the government of that country to create the conditions for recruiting veterans of the former Afghan government into the British Army.
