Disaster in Caracas; Death toll from deadly Venezuela earthquake exceeds 900

These earthquakes occurred along the northern coast of Venezuela, 39 seconds apart. First, a foreshock with a magnitude of 7.2 was recorded near the San Felipe region, followed by the main earthquake with an intensity of 7.5 southeast of the city of Yumare.


Following these incidents, Venezuela's Geological Service reported a 4.9-magnitude aftershock on Friday that also shook the capital, Caracas. Meanwhile, a United Nations report has estimated the direct damage from these earthquakes at approximately $6.7 billion.


According to Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela's National Assembly, the earthquakes have damaged at least 346 infrastructure sites, including 250 residential buildings and 20 shopping centers, while eight hospitals have been urgently evacuated. The highest number of casualties and damages has been recorded in the coastal state of La Guaira.


Geologists have described this event as a rare phenomenon known as a "double earthquake," a situation in which two powerful earthquakes occur nearly simultaneously in one region. In the wake of this disaster, several countries—regardless of ongoing diplomatic tensions—have sent rescue teams, equipment, and humanitarian aid to Venezuela, and the United States has also announced the deployment of military equipment to provide logistical support and rescue operations.

Venezuelan authorities have announced that the death toll from the double earthquakes on Wednesday has reached 920 people. In this event, at least 3,360 people have also been injured, and more than 50,000 individuals have been reported missing. In addition, it is said that 172 people remain trapped under rubble.
