Bloomberg: Afghan asylum seekers summoned by US immigration authorities over Christmas

This action follows the Trump administration's stringent policies against Afghan migrants.


Based on documents reviewed by Bloomberg News, some sessions have even been scheduled for Fridays, Saturdays, and official holidays, at a time when most government offices are closed and access to lawyers and legal services is limited.


These summonses come after Trump canceled temporary protections for Afghan refugees. Afghan citizens who were previously shielded from deportation in the U.S. until their cases were fully adjudicated are now at risk of detention and deportation, and even holders of special immigrant visas are not exempt from this situation.


The head of the Afghan Evac organization has described this action as inhumane and stated that using official holidays for summonses and case reviews—when access to legal support is limited—does not appear to be "standard administrative procedure." In response, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has characterized these sessions as part of routine procedures and stated that refugees' documents are reviewed even during holidays.


At the same time, sweeping changes to U.S. immigration policies—including the suspension of green card applications for Afghan refugees and the closure of the special office supporting those who collaborated with the U.S.—have created harsh and uncertain conditions for Afghan refugees and heightened concerns about their future in America.

The U.S. Immigration Authority, in an action, has summoned some Afghan refugees during the Christmas and New Year's holidays to present documents and review their cases.
