Ahmad Massoud welcomes Europe's opposition to normalizing relations with the Taliban

He emphasized that European countries are expected to stand alongside the people of Afghanistan, not alongside "a group that suppresses the people."


Mr. Massoud, in a message on the social network X addressed to Pina Picierno, Vice-President of the European Parliament, and other members of that body on Saturday (May 22), wrote that values should not be sacrificed to political expediency.


In this message, he stated that at a time when the international order based on law and values is facing serious challenges, Europe must remain committed to the principles it has defended for years, including human rights, democracy, human dignity, and the rule of law.


According to Ahmad Massoud, these values should not be ignored in the name of "political expediency" or "appeasement of a terrorist regime." He also added that history will remember those who stood alongside justice and freedom.


Meanwhile, discussions about the European Union's engagement with the Taliban have met with widespread political reactions. Reports indicate that the European Commission, in collaboration with Swedish officials, is planning to hold technical meetings with Taliban representatives in Brussels—a meeting said to be the first official engagement since the fall of Kabul in 2021.


European officials have confirmed that the aim of these meetings is to address migration and administrative issues; however, the matter has drawn criticism from several members of the European Parliament. They have warned that any official engagement could be seen as a form of legitimization for the Taliban.


Alongside these reactions, debates continue about the legitimacy of these meetings and their political implications at the European level, and it remains unclear who from the Taliban delegation will participate in these talks.

Ahmad Massoud, leader of the National Resistance Front, has expressed gratitude to members of the European Parliament for opposing the normalization of relations with the Taliban.
