US Congressmen Call Plan to Transfer Afghan Refugees to Congo "Shameful"

Juan Vargas, a member of Congress, described this action as "horrific and shameful" and said that those who risked their lives for America are being treated in an inhumane manner.


Amy Bera, another member of Congress, also called this plan a "cruel betrayal" of Afghan interpreters, allied forces, and their families, adding that these individuals now face an "impossible choice" between returning to Afghanistan under Taliban rule or being transferred to a country with a severe humanitarian crisis. She urged the Trump administration to fulfill its commitments to these people.


According to a New York Times report, Trump intends to transfer approximately 1,100 Afghan refugees, including 400 children, from the Al Udeid camp in Qatar to the Democratic Republic of Congo. These individuals were moved to this camp after the fall of Kabul and were promised visas and relocation to the United States.


Nearly five years after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, thousands of Afghan refugees remain in limbo in regional countries. Donald Trump's return to the White House has halted the relocation process for America's former Afghan collaborators.

A number of U.S. Congress members have strongly criticized the Donald Trump administration's plan to relocate Afghan refugees to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
