Haqqani: Past insecurity has hindered healthcare delivery in Afghanistan

This comes as the Taliban were previously considered one of the primary sources of insecurity in Afghanistan, with numerous reports published of their attacks on health facilities. The Swedish Committee in 2019 had announced that the Taliban had closed 42 clinics in Maidan Wardak province. Zabiullah Mujahid also confirmed this matter in an interview with Radio Free Europe.


This meeting took place on Sunday, July 4, and during it, the two sides discussed the state of Afghanistan’s health system and ways to improve health services.


Haqqani emphasized that joint cooperation to strengthen the health sector is essential and that political considerations should not hinder the provision of services.


According to an announcement from the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior, topics such as strengthening the health system, expanding cooperation with international organizations, and polio vaccination programs were also examined in this meeting. A number of international officials, including representatives from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, UNICEF, and the ambassadors of the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, were present at this meeting.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s Minister of Interior, stated during a meeting with Hannon Balkhi, a senior official of the World Health Organization, that insecurity in recent years has been one of the main factors limiting the provision of health services in parts of Afghanistan. He also added that people are still facing difficulties in accessing medical services.
