Sources: Jumah Khan Fateh continues to mine gold in Badakhshan despite Taliban orders

According to sources, the Taliban have not yet prevented the activities of individuals affiliated with Fateh, despite a nationwide ban on mining. This is while the lack of operating permits has been cited by the Taliban as a reason for stopping the work of local companies; however, the companies and individuals affiliated with Fateh also lack permits.


Juma Khan Fateh, about two weeks ago, clashed with the Taliban leadership to the brink of armed conflict following a dispute; but after mediation by the Badakhshan Taliban leadership under Qari Fasihuddin, he traveled to Kabul and denied his rift with the Taliban leadership. Sources speculate that the continued activities of his affiliates may be part of the agreement reached.


Mining activities in Darwaz and Shaki had previously been halted following clashes between mine workers and Taliban officials. The Qatqata mine, one of Shaki's major gold mines, has in recent months become one of the main flashpoints of tension between the Taliban and local residents.


Meanwhile, the Taliban have also halted the activities of local companies in the Shiwa area, the site of Badakhshan's largest gold mines. Sources say that in this region, only companies affiliated with the Taliban are permitted to operate, and local companies that gathered in protest against this decision have demanded a resolution to the issue.

Local sources in Badakhshan say that despite the Taliban leadership's order to halt gold extraction by local companies, individuals affiliated with Juma Khan Fateh, a local Taliban commander, are still engaged in extensive gold mining in the Nesi district.
