Protests Continue in Iran; US Research Institutes Report Limitations of Government Control

These institutions say that Iranian officials, despite widespread nationwide internet shutdowns, have still not succeeded in containing the protest movements.


This assessment states that the internet cutoff was carried out with the aim of preventing coordination among protesters and concealing the scale of the unrest; however, protests continue in a number of provinces and urban centers.


Reports indicate that on January 8 and 9, a number of buildings and government institutions were targeted for attack or destruction.


This assessment also emphasizes that local police forces are facing a shortage of resources and work pressure, and as a result, the Iranian government will likely rely more heavily on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces to control the situation.


It is said that the stance of senior Islamic Republic officials toward the protesters has hardened, and there are signs of preparation for the use of stringent security measures; a development that has heightened concerns about the escalation of confrontations.

Based on a recent assessment by American research institutions, the new wave of protests in various cities of Iran has reached a stage that has challenged the control capacity of the Islamic Republic government.
