Nabil: Mohaghegh's remarks on Durand are a political twist

Nabil described these remarks as a "questionable political U-turn" and said: "More than a clear legal opinion, it reeks of a backroom deal." He added that if this stance had been articulated when Mohaqeq was at the peak of his power and independent decision-making, it could have been considered a discussable political viewpoint; but under current circumstances, its timing and direction cast doubt on the independence of the perspective.


According to Nabil, the Durand issue is a sensitive historical matter intertwined with the collective will of the Afghan people, and determining its fate requires a national, transparent process based on consensus, "not individual, short-term stances whose course shifts with changing relationships."


He emphasized that such positions can bolster the Taliban's legitimacy and scatter the ranks of the opposition, and Afghan society needs consistent, clear, and reliable voices now more than ever.


Reactions to Mohaqeq's statements have been widespread. Omar Dawoodzai, a member of the National Salvation Assembly of Afghanistan, also wrote on his X account that, unlike Mohaqeq, he does not recognize the Durand Line as an official border.

Rahmatullah Nabil, the former head of Afghanistan's National Security, responded to statements by Mohammad Mohaqeq, leader of the Islamic Unity Party, regarding the Durand Line. Mohaqeq had recently declared that he recognizes the Durand Line as the official border between Afghanistan and Pakistan and adheres to the borders recognized by the United Nations.
