Amnesty International: Germany has turned human rights into a tool for the Taliban

The organization has described cooperation with the Taliban in the deportation process as dangerous and emphasized that human rights must not be turned into a "bargaining tool" with the Taliban. It also referenced the case of Faridoun Tofan, who, after his identity was verified by a Taliban representative, now faces the risk of deportation.


Meanwhile, German media have reported that at least six Afghan citizens without criminal records are also at risk of deportation. Under the new policy, deportations of Afghan citizens will no longer be limited solely to those with criminal convictions or security threats, and the restrictions on referring them for deportation have been lifted. It has also been reported that the Taliban previously halted one deportation flight in exchange for diplomatic concessions.


This decision has drawn criticism from political parties and refugee rights advocacy groups. They consider the normalization of deportations to Afghanistan to be in violation of Germany's human rights obligations and have warned that this policy will increase anxiety and pressure on Afghan refugees in Germany.


Amnesty International has also stated that at least one Afghan citizen deported from Germany in 2024 was killed after returning to Afghanistan.


In response, a number of officials from the states of Thuringia, Brandenburg, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt have supported the expansion of deportations. According to them, this policy includes not only criminals but also single men and individuals who have a final order to leave Germany, have no prospects for staying, rely on social assistance, or have not cooperated in their identity verification process.

Amnesty International has criticized the German government's new policy, warning that Berlin intends to deport an Afghan citizen without a criminal record for the first time.
