Simultaneously with the exercises; Xi Jinping: Taiwan's return to China is inevitable

He stated that China's unification is an unstoppable process and that the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share a historical and inseparable bond.


These remarks came amid China's large-scale military exercises around Taiwan, which put Taiwan's forces on high alert. China views these maneuvers as part of defending its territorial integrity, while Taiwan considers them a direct threat to regional security.


In this exercise, named "Joint Sword 2025," China's navy, air force, rocket force, and coast guard participated, with dozens of fighter jets and warships deployed in areas near Taiwan.


Taiwanese officials announced that after the maneuvers concluded, some Chinese forces had withdrawn from the area.


China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and does not recognize the island's independent sovereignty, while the Taiwanese government rejects this claim. Recent tensions escalated following the announcement of new U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, a move that drew strong protests from Beijing.


In response to these developments, Taiwan's government condemned China's exercises and, by releasing images of its own military equipment—including the U.S.-made HIMARS missile system—emphasized its defensive readiness and deterrence capabilities.

Xi Jinping, President of China, announced in his New Year's Eve speech that Taiwan's unification with China is "inevitable" and warned that independence efforts will be fruitless.
