Former British security minister: Taliban justify women's rights with extremist ideology

He strongly condemned the deprivation of Afghan women and girls of their fundamental human rights.


Tugendhat wrote in a message on the social network X on Monday that the Taliban justifies its extensive restrictions against women and girls with what he called an "abhorrent Islamist ideology." He identified this approach as the main factor exacerbating the human rights crisis in Afghanistan.


This British politician, who now chairs the UK Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, also reposted a video of Neda Mohammad Nadim, the Taliban's Higher Education Minister. In this video, released in the month of Virgon (September) 1403, Nadim announces that the education and schooling of girls is prohibited until further notice.


Over the past four years, Taliban officials have repeatedly claimed that conditions are not in place for reopening girls' schools; this comes even as they simultaneously speak of having established complete security and implementing major infrastructure projects.


Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, has also stated that segments of Afghan society oppose the education of girls.


Tugendhat, without directly naming the United States, identified that country's agreement with the Taliban as one of the main factors behind the current situation of women in Afghanistan.


He emphasized that after this agreement, Afghanistan was "left to its own devices" and asked: "Whose peace was this? It wasn't for the citizens of Afghanistan."

Tom Tugendhat, the former UK Security Minister, described the current situation in Afghanistan as a "terrifying disaster" in response to recent remarks by the Taliban's Higher Education Minister about the continuation of the ban on women's education.
