Australia Issues Warning Again: Travel to Afghanistan May Be One-Way

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday, June 28, by updating its travel advisory, that Afghanistan remains one of the world's most dangerous destinations. The warning states that several Australian citizens have been killed, injured, or arbitrarily detained in Afghanistan in recent years.


According to this advisory, security risks in Afghanistan are serious and real, and those who travel to the country may never be able to return to Australia. The Department of Foreign Affairs has also warned that women face even greater risks in Afghanistan.


The Department of Foreign Affairs emphasized that in the event of a crisis, Australia's capacity to provide consular services and assistance to its citizens in Afghanistan would be severely limited. For this reason, Afghanistan remains at Level 4 of Australia's travel advisory scale—the highest level, reserved for countries with a high risk of terrorist attacks, armed conflict, violence, arbitrary detention, and widespread crime.


This warning comes as the Taliban claims to ensure security across Afghanistan; however, many countries continue to deem travel to Afghanistan highly dangerous and have repeatedly urged their citizens in recent years to avoid traveling there.

The Australian government has once again issued a severe warning against travel to Afghanistan, urging its citizens and Afghan residents in the country to refrain from traveling there under any circumstances—not even to attend weddings or visit family members.
