A doctor and 10 Afghan students are being held in Punjab

According to available information, 10 of these students were pursuing their specialized training at Quaid-e-Azam Medical University and the Bahawalpur Teaching Hospital, where they were arrested on site. Additionally, Noorullah, an Afghan doctor, was arrested from the Sahiwal Teaching Hospital in southeastern Punjab.


Pakistani authorities have not yet provided any explanation regarding the reason for these arrests; however, available information indicates that the expiration of these individuals' visas was the cause of their detention.


Also based on this information, Pakistani police forces arrested Noorullah while he was in the operating room and transferred him from the hospital.


The arrested students say they entered Pakistan legally through the Punjab Medical Residency Program and are studying in specialized medical programs. They emphasize that, despite the expiration of their visas, they have submitted all necessary documents for renewal; however, their visas have not yet been extended.


According to these students, police officers only stated during the arrests that the action was being carried out based on orders from senior officials.


These arrests come as Pakistan's Ministry of Interior, in a circular dated June 28, instructed provincial governments to detain Afghan citizens without legal residency documents or whose visas have expired, effective from July 10 onward.


The arrested students also say that for about six months, since relations between Pakistan and the Taliban soured, the process of renewing their visas has been halted, and Afghan citizen students have come under pressure.


They emphasize that their continued studies and specialized medical training should not fall victim to political disputes, and they have called on the Taliban to engage in talks with Pakistani authorities to resolve the visa issues and allow these students to continue their education.

On Monday, police in Pakistan's Punjab province arrested a doctor and at least 10 Afghan citizen students who were studying in specialized medical programs at universities and teaching hospitals in the province.
