UNAMA confirms new wave of arrests of women in Herat, expresses concern

This body, in a statement issued on Sunday, expressed concern over these actions and warned that continuing such a trend would bring serious concerns regarding human rights.


The UNAMA statement noted that the detention of women in Herat could have significant consequences for the human rights situation in Afghanistan.


This reaction comes as the Taliban have, over the past two days, detained dozens of women on the pretext of not adhering to the hijab standards prescribed by the group.


UNAMA has also emphasized that freedom of movement is a fundamental right of all individuals, and women and men must equally enjoy legal rights and protections.


This body has called on Taliban officials to respect the fundamental rights of citizens and to refrain from adopting and implementing restrictive measures against women.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has confirmed that the Taliban have launched a new wave of detaining women in the city of Herat.
