Punjab police step up detention of Afghan citizens without legal documents

Local sources say that police forces in the city of Jhelum have launched extensive operations against these Afghan migrants in recent days.


Based on published information, police arrested several Afghan citizens on Saturday for lacking residency documents, and simultaneously, a Pakistani citizen was placed under investigation for the charge of harboring them. These actions are being carried out within the framework of Pakistan's new government policy to restrict the presence of undocumented migrants.


At the same time, Jhelum police issued a statement warning residents of the city to refrain from renting out houses, shops, and vehicles to undocumented migrants.


The statement emphasized that illegal migrants are not permitted to engage in commercial activities, buying and selling, or employment in this city.


Tariq Aziz Sindhu, the Jhelum police chief, stated that these actions are being implemented based on direct orders from the Punjab government, and anyone who violates these regulations will face legal action.


The roundup operations targeting Afghan migrants in Jhelum began several months ago, and Pakistani authorities had previously reported the arrest of hundreds of Afghan migrants in this region.


In the wake of escalating political tensions between Islamabad and the Taliban, the Pakistani government has accelerated the deportation of Afghan migrants across the country—an action that has led to the return of thousands of families to Afghanistan.


This situation has also raised concerns among human rights organizations. International organizations and United Nations experts have warned of the humanitarian consequences of forced deportations and urged the Pakistani government to remain committed to its international obligations toward migrants.


According to statistics from UN-affiliated agencies, in 2025 alone, more than two million Afghan migrants have returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan and Iran, with a significant portion having been forcibly deported.

Reports from Pakistan's Punjab province indicate that the process of arresting and rounding up undocumented Afghan migrants in this province has intensified.
