Marco Rubio: Afghanistan withdrawal is a dark stain on American history

Rubio made these remarks in a statement marking the fifth anniversary of the attack on Kabul airport, where he paid tribute to the memory of the 13 U.S. service members killed in the incident. According to him, the attack not only resulted in the deaths of American service members but also claimed the lives of more than 160 Afghan civilians, while 45 other U.S. service members were wounded.


The U.S. Secretary of State, expressing condolences to the families of the victims, said the Trump administration is committed to honoring the memory of those killed in this attack and all individuals who lost their lives during America's 20-year presence in Afghanistan, and to providing the answers that the American people deserve.


In a separate message on the social network X, he also stated that America will never forget the victims of this event and will not allow "such a betrayal" to be committed against its military forces again.


The suicide bombing on August 26, 2021, at Kabul airport was one of the deadliest incidents during the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan. At that time, thousands of Afghan citizens and foreigners, following the Taliban's return to Kabul, were attempting to leave the country through emergency evacuation operations. The Islamic State's Khorasan branch claimed responsibility for the attack.


The Biden administration's handling of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan faced widespread criticism from Republicans and members of the U.S. Congress.



Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, has described the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan during Joe Biden's presidency as "catastrophic" and stated that the manner of this withdrawal has become a "black stain in history" for America.
