UN expert: Taliban extremism poses transnational threat to global security

The Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Irish Parliament held a session on Tuesday, May 21, titled "The Current Situation in Afghanistan with a Special Focus on Human Rights and the Taliban's Treatment of Women and Girls." John Lahart, the committee chair, said ahead of the session: "The situation in Afghanistan remains a matter of deep concern to the international community." He described the human rights situation in Afghanistan under Taliban control as "dire."


Richard Bennett warned during an online session with the Irish Parliament committees that the Taliban is seeking to align Afghanistan's education system with its ideology—a process that strengthens the foundations of extremism. He added that poverty and unemployment among youth, combined with extremism, is "a dangerous combination with potential security consequences that extend beyond Afghanistan's borders."


The international community and organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the expansion of religious schools and the resulting extremism in Afghanistan. In the month of Aqrab 1403 (October/November 2024), representatives from more than 40 countries at a meeting in Moscow warned of the rise in radical religious teachings and racial discrimination, stating that this trend could have catastrophic consequences.


Since taking control of the country, the Taliban have paid special attention to expanding religious schools. According to statistics from the Taliban's administration in the month of Jadi last year (December 2023/January 2024), more than 20,000 schools are active under the Ministry of Education, with approximately 2.5 million students studying religious sciences. Critics emphasize that the educational content in these schools exacerbates extremism and has raised widespread concerns about its cross-border implications.

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, warned the Irish Parliament that the Taliban are rebuilding the country's education system based on their extremist ideology. Bennett emphasized that poverty, unemployment, and the spread of extremism under Taliban rule could threaten the security of Afghanistan and the world.
