Russia and China: Terrorism emerging from Afghanistan is a major threat to the region and the world

In this statement, released on Wednesday, the two countries called on the international community and regional nations to strengthen counterterrorism cooperation with Afghanistan and prevent the use of its territory to threaten neighbors.


Moscow and Beijing also emphasized their support for efforts to combat terrorism in Afghanistan and stated that the country must be prevented from becoming a haven for extremist groups. At the same time, they announced their readiness to expand bilateral and multilateral cooperation regarding Afghanistan.


These two Asian powers, in another section of their position, stressed the importance of regional mechanisms in resolving the Afghan issue and referenced the Moscow format, the neighbors' countries meeting, the Quadrilateral Regional Group (Russia, China, Iran, and Pakistan), and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.


In continuation of these concerns, Russia specifically warned about the activities of the ISIS-Khorasan branch and certain extremist groups in Central Asia, emphasizing that instability in Afghanistan could threaten regional security and even Russia's southern borders.


China expressed a similar concern, stating that there is a risk of Uyghur separatist groups or extremist currents using Afghan territory to threaten the Xinjiang region.


Despite these security stances, Russia and China have maintained their political and diplomatic relations with the Taliban and are working to influence developments in Afghanistan through dialogue and regional cooperation. Moscow has even recognized the Taliban's governance, while China has not yet taken such a step.

Russia and China, in a joint statement following the Russian President's visit to Beijing, expressed concern over the rising threat of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan and described it as a serious danger to regional and global security.
