Mohammad Mohaqiq: Pressure on Shiites is a sign of Taliban's helplessness

In a statement, the party said that authoritarian regimes in Afghanistan, in periods close to their downfall, have increasingly resorted to ethnic and religious discrimination; a policy that, according to the Unity Party, has accelerated the regime’s collapse rather than strengthening it.


The Unity Party has also accused the Taliban of informalizing the Ja'fari school of thought after returning to power in August 2021, and has condemned actions such as shutting down Tamadon and Rah-e Farda televisions, raiding the Khatam al-Nabiyyin Seminary, pressuring Shia religious ceremonies, and the restrictions imposed against Hazaras and Shias.


In the latest incidents, Taliban forces raided the Khatam al-Nabiyyin Seminary in Kabul on Saturday and arrested a number of professors and students. A day later, the office of Rah-e Farda television, owned by Mohammad Mohaqeq, was shut down, and reports indicate the arrest of Salman Akhlaqi, the owner of this media outlet.


The Unity Party has called on Hazaras, Shias, and other Afghan citizens to maintain their unity and cohesion, and to pursue legal and rational avenues to counter what it calls “oppressive acts.” The Taliban has so far provided no official explanation regarding these actions against Shia centers in Kabul.



The Islamic Unity Party of the People of Afghanistan, led by Mohammad Mohaqeq, has described the Taliban’s recent actions against Shia leaders and Shia religious and cultural centers in Kabul as illegal and discriminatory, deeming them a sign of the Taliban regime’s desperation.
