Fazli: Taliban wants from America what Ghani and Trump agreed upon

Fazli, referring to the Taliban’s recent stance, stated that this group must respect the rights of the Afghan people in order to gain credibility and cooperation from the international community. He emphasized that legitimacy is achieved through responsible governance and adherence to citizens’ rights, not by demanding it from the global community.


He also accused the Taliban of restricting women’s rights and suppressing civil liberties, stating that as long as millions of women and girls are deprived of education and work, and restrictions on the people continue, the Taliban cannot expect global respect and legitimacy.


Amir Khan Muttaqi told the Financial Times that the Taliban welcomes U.S. investment in sectors such as mining, infrastructure, agriculture, and trade. He also called for normalization of relations with the United States in an interview with a Japanese news agency, saying that Kabul seeks relations based on mutual respect and shared interests.


On September 23, 2017, Ghani and Trump had expressed support in New York for investment by American companies in Afghanistan’s mining sector. The White House at the time viewed this initiative as an opportunity for Afghanistan’s economic growth and reduced dependence on U.S. aid; however, widespread insecurity prevented it from being implemented. The potential value of Afghanistan’s minerals at that time was estimated at around one trillion dollars.



Fazl Mahmoud Fazli, former head of the Afghan government's Office of Administrative Affairs, says that the recent proposal by Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister, for U.S. investment in Afghanistan is similar to an agreement that had been raised in 2017 between Ashraf Ghani and Donald Trump. According to him, a joint working group had also been established to examine the technical implementation of this agreement; however, the United States never committed to its full execution due to geopolitical considerations.
