Lionel Messi bids farewell to Argentina national team after two decades

Messi described the decision as difficult and painful, saying that throughout all his years with the national team, he has fought with all his might for the Argentina shirt. He thanked the fans, his family, coaches, and teammates, adding that from now on, he will continue to support the national team from the outside, just like a fan.


During his time with Argentina, Messi won the 2022 World Cup and the Copa América in 2021 and 2024. He also finished as runner-up in the 2014 and 2026 World Cups and earned the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament in the 2014 and 2022 World Cups.


His retirement was announced a few weeks after Argentina's loss to Spain in the final of the 2026 World Cup. Messi said he wrote the farewell message two days after that final, and the passing of his father, Jorge Messi, in early August made his decision to step away from the national team even more definitive.


At the end of his message, Messi expressed pride in his years with the national team and the moments he created alongside his teammates for the fans, thanking the people of Argentina and writing: "God, thank you for making me Argentine."
