UN Secretary-General Calls for Immediate End to Tensions Between Pakistan and the Taliban

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said during a press briefing on Monday that Guterres has urged Afghanistan and Pakistan to resolve their differences through dialogue and diplomatic solutions. He also emphasized the need for all parties involved to comply with international humanitarian law, stating that civilians and civilian infrastructure must remain protected under all circumstances.


Citing a statement from the Office of the UN Deputy Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), Dujarric noted that Pakistan's airstrikes in the provinces of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar have resulted in numerous civilian casualties.


Earlier, the UN Deputy Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) announced that following Pakistan's airstrikes on Sunday evening, the 7th of Cancer [June 28], in the provinces of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar, at least 28 civilians were killed and another 49 injured. According to UNAMA, women and children are among the dead and wounded from these attacks.


According to Dujarric, these strikes have not only caused human casualties but also led to the displacement of residents from the affected areas, with UN humanitarian agencies currently assessing their needs and preparing emergency aid.


Pakistan announced on Monday that, in response to several "terrorist" attacks on its soil, it had targeted positions of militant groups inside Afghan territory. In response, the Taliban claimed that dozens of civilians were killed in these strikes.


Tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban have intensified in recent years, coinciding with an increase in attacks by armed groups and border clashes. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban of enabling the activities of armed groups on Afghan soil, but the Taliban have rejected these allegations.

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, expressed concern over the escalation of clashes between Pakistan and the Taliban, calling for an immediate halt to the violence and protection of civilian lives.
