Trump praises Sharia: I will remove Syria from the list of terrorist countries

These remarks came after his meeting with Ahmad Sharaa, the current President of Syria. Trump praised Sharaa's performance and said that he has managed to unify the country in a short period of time.


Trump compared Syria's current situation to the past and said that the country is now more stable, whereas previously it was embroiled in "real chaos." In response to a question about removing Syria from this list, he said: "I think I'll do it. Why not? Yes, I'll do it."


The U.S. President added that reducing sanctions against Syria has previously also been a great incentive and help for this country. Removing Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism—which also includes countries like Iran and North Korea—could pave the way for private investments and the expansion of U.S. economic and diplomatic relations with Syria.


This decision comes as Syria's relations with its former allies have changed. Ahmad Sharaa has cut ties with Hezbollah in Lebanon and ended Russia's military presence at bases in Latakia and Tartus. Trump said that the new Syrian government can assist the United States in countering regional threats and the issue of Hezbollah.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, announced on Wednesday on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara that he will likely remove Syria from the U.S. government's list of state sponsors of terrorism.
