Canada urges city to avoid travel to Afghanistan

Canada states that foreign nationals and individuals with ties to Western countries face risks of kidnapping, terrorist violence, and arbitrary detention by the Taliban. This risk is even greater for those connected to Afghanistan's former government or individuals who have violated Taliban rules, and some foreign nationals and dual citizens may be accused of espionage.


The alert states that terrorist groups are active throughout Afghanistan, including in Kabul and major cities, and attacks could occur at any time. Foreigners, security forces, NGO staff, journalists, media workers, healthcare personnel, and other civilians are listed among the groups at risk.


The Government of Canada has also warned about kidnappings for ransom and fake checkpoints. According to the country, hostages may be sold to terrorist groups and held captive for years. Travel to tourist and remote areas is also deemed dangerous, and even tours by reputable companies cannot fully eliminate this risk.


Canada states in another section of its advisory that women in Afghanistan are particularly vulnerable to harassment and abuse, including from the Taliban. The Canadian embassy in Afghanistan has also suspended operations, and the country's ability to provide consular services and assistance to its citizens in Afghanistan is severely limited.



The Government of Canada has urged its citizens in its latest security alert to refrain from traveling to Afghanistan. The country considers Afghanistan's security situation to remain unstable and dangerous, and has asked individuals currently in Afghanistan to review their security plans and, if necessary, relocate cautiously to safer locations.
