Musk: SpaceX has prioritized the project of building cities on the moon

Musk wrote on the social network X that SpaceX intends to begin work on its long-standing goal of building a city on Mars within the next five to seven years; "but the primary priority is to secure the future of civilization, and the Moon is more quickly accessible." This comes as he had previously stated that he plans to send an uncrewed mission to Mars by the end of 2026.


According to this report, SpaceX has informed investors that it is prioritizing a return to the Moon and postponing efforts to travel to Mars to a later time. The target for an uncrewed landing on the Moon is estimated for March 2027. SpaceX is one of the main contractors for NASA's Artemis program and has a four-billion-dollar contract to land astronauts on the lunar surface using Starship.


The United States faces intense competition from China in returning humans to the Moon this decade. Humans have not returned to the lunar surface since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.


Less than a week ago, Musk announced that SpaceX has acquired the artificial intelligence company xAI (which he himself also leads). In this deal, the rocket and satellite company SpaceX is valued at one trillion dollars, and the AI company at 250 billion dollars.


Supporters of this move believe the acquisition could bolster SpaceX's programs to create space-based data centers—centers that, in Musk's view, are more energy-efficient than terrestrial ones given the sharp increase in demand for computing power due to the development of artificial intelligence.

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, said on Sunday, February 8, that SpaceX plans to focus on building a "self-sustaining city" on the Moon—a project that, according to him, could be realized in less than 10 years.
