Trump: America pays the most for NATO, but gets no benefit

Trump, on Friday, June 1, posted a message on his social media account, along with a chart of NATO members' defense spending, claiming that the United States has allocated approximately $999 billion to this alliance from 2014 to 2025—a figure that, according to him, is far greater than the contributions of other members.


He also pointed to published statistics, stating that the United Kingdom spent $90.5 billion during this period, France $66.5 billion, Italy $48.8 billion, and Poland $44.4 billion on NATO, while other countries like Germany have had a much smaller share relative to the United States.


The President of the United States once again called on NATO members to take on a greater share of the alliance's defense costs. He also claimed that this organization has not provided the necessary support to the United States on certain issues, including countering the Islamic Republic, and emphasized that continuing such a situation is unacceptable for Washington.


NATO was established in 1949 with the signing of the Washington Treaty and currently has 32 member countries. This alliance operates on the principle of collective defense; a principle under which an attack on any member is considered an attack on all members, and other countries are obligated to support it.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, once again criticized the amount of financial contributions from the United States to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), stating that Washington has paid more than any other member for this alliance; yet, it has not received commensurate benefits in return. He described this situation as "ridiculous" and lacking in reciprocity.
