Khawaja Asif: 70 to 80 percent of people in Pakistan are Afghans

Asif said Pakistan has sheltered Afghans over the past five decades and included them in the use of the country's limited resources. He added that Islamabad, after the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan, had hoped its borders would be secure and the countries of the region would live in peace.


Pakistan's Defense Minister also claimed that the perpetrators of attacks on mosques, schools, and markets, as well as those attacking army forces, are predominantly Afghan, and some of them express solidarity with India, which he called Pakistan's long-standing enemy. The Taliban has consistently rejected these allegations.


These remarks come amid ongoing disputes over the presence of Afghan students in Pakistan. The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council had previously ordered the return of Afghan students; however, the Lahore High Court suspended its implementation on September 11 and extended that suspension on September 18.


Asif also criticized some Pakistani students for supporting Afghan students, deeming it political. Pakistan accuses the Taliban of providing a base for anti-Pakistan armed groups to operate from Afghan soil—an accusation the Taliban has rejected.
