Malala Yousafzai: Hosting the Taliban in Europe means ignoring the rights of Afghan women

On Monday, June 15, she wrote in a post on the social network X that any dialogue with the Taliban could be interpreted as political and diplomatic recognition of the group; a group that, in her view, has deliberately restricted the rights of women and girls.


Yousafzai, referring to the extensive bans and restrictions against women in the areas of education, employment, and freedom of movement, stated that the Taliban in Afghanistan have established a structure based on "gender apartheid."


This women's rights activist also criticized the program inviting Taliban officials to Brussels to negotiate the return of Afghan migrants, warning that such an action carries a troubling message. According to her, this approach creates the impression that a government can systematically suppress women and girls while simultaneously being accepted as a legitimate party in diplomatic relations.


Malala Yousafzai went on to reference the detention of several women in Herat due to their attire and the violent treatment of protesters, viewing these incidents as signs of escalating pressures and restrictions in Afghanistan.


The invitation to Taliban representatives in Brussels has so far faced widespread critical reactions from civil society activists, Afghan women, and some European politicians and parties. Critics believe this decision could lead to legitimizing the Taliban and contradicts the European Union's human rights values.


Despite these criticisms, the European Union has not yet made any changes to its decision to host the Taliban delegation. Reports indicate that the main goal of these talks is to reach an agreement to accelerate the deportation of Afghan migrants from European countries.

Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has reacted to the invitation extended to a Taliban delegation to Europe, emphasizing that the European Union should not engage with a regime that, according to her, has triggered one of the world's most severe human rights crises.
