Taliban governor in Balkh threatens critics in mosques and media with military trial

According to his statements, anyone who engages in "negative propaganda against the Islamic system" in mosques, media outlets, or public gatherings must be referred to a military court.


Haji Zaid, the spokesman for the Taliban governor in Balkh, announced on Sunday on the social network X that these remarks were made during a meeting attended by governors, security commanders, the chief of staff of the 209 Al-Fath Corps, and intelligence officials from the northern provinces.


The Taliban governor in Balkh has also urged citizens to directly raise any complaints or issues with Taliban officials. He stated that he is ready to hear the people's grievances against Taliban administrations.


Since regaining control of Afghanistan, the Taliban have imposed extensive restrictions on criticism of their officials and governing structures. Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban leader, issued a decree in the month of Jadi last year prohibiting public and media criticism of the group's subordinate officials.


In that decree, the Taliban leader stated that leveling "baseless accusations" against officials lacks religious legitimacy, sows hatred among the people, and will result in pursuit and punishment.


Meanwhile, the Afghanistan Media Support Organization (AMSO) has repeatedly criticized the Taliban's restrictions on media. The organization says the Taliban prevent the publication of critical reports and news in domestic media, forcing outlets to coordinate their content with the group before release.


Taliban intelligence has also detained journalists on multiple occasions for their reporting and halted the operations of some local media outlets.

Mohammad Yusuf Wafa, the Taliban governor in Balkh, has threatened to refer critics of the group to military courts and demanded a halt to what he called "negative propaganda" against the Taliban.
