Hopes for Rafah Crossing to Open; Israel Returns Body of Last Hostage from Gaza

According to the army's statement, the remains of "Ron Golli," a police officer who was held in Gaza for more than 840 days, have been identified and will be transferred to Israel for burial.


This action is described as one of the key conditions of the first phase of Donald Trump's plan, the President of the United States, to end the war in Gaza.


At the same time, the return of these remains could pave the way for a limited reopening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt; a crossing that serves as the primary lifeline connecting this war-torn region to the outside world, and this action is carried out within the framework of Israel's commitments.


The Palestinian committee, composed of technocrats and formed with U.S. support to administer Gaza, has announced that this border crossing will reopen this week; however, the exact timing of the reopening has not been specified.


It should be noted that the Rafah border crossing has largely been closed since Israeli forces took control of the Gaza side approximately two years ago in May 2024. The crossing has remained shuttered for most of this period and has only been opened on a limited and short-term basis during ceasefires or under temporary arrangements.

The Israeli army announced on Monday, January 26, that it has returned the remains of the last hostage remaining in Gaza to Israel.
