Journalists' Center: 12 journalists temporarily detained by Taliban in Khost

According to information from a local source, Taliban Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice officers prevented the journalists from continuing their work and marched them on foot for about 10 minutes from a busy road to the department's office. Some officers walked ahead of the journalists, while others followed behind, and the public witnessed the incident. Local sources said the officers first gathered the journalists present at the exhibition in one place and then escorted them as a group to the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice office.


A local journalist told the Afghanistan Journalists Center that these 12 journalists were held for about an hour at the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice office. During this time, the officers recorded their personal information and confiscated their cameras; however, they were eventually allowed to leave the premises. Several journalists, on condition of anonymity, said the head of the Taliban's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Khost had explained to them the department's rule prohibiting the filming of living beings.


According to these journalists, they were warned that they are henceforth prohibited from taking photos or videos and should not carry filming equipment with them. This comes even as Mohammad Saber Saberi, head of the Taliban's Information and Culture Department in Khost, had previously told journalists that they could prepare photo and video reports from the book exhibition.


The Afghanistan Journalists Center has described this incident as "humiliating and inhumane" and stated that such behavior violates journalists' professional rights and human dignity. The center has called on the Taliban to return the journalists' equipment and ensure they can work without fear of arrest.


The Taliban has not yet commented officially on this incident.



The Afghanistan Journalists Center announced that 12 journalists were briefly detained by Taliban Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice officers in Khost city while covering a book exhibition. The center stated that these journalists had been invited by the Taliban's Information and Culture Department to cover the event and, while filming and conducting interviews in the second security district of Khost city, encountered obstruction from Taliban officers. The journalists' cameras were also seized by the Taliban.
