Pakistani Senator: Taliban's legalization of child marriage is shocking

Falconer herself described the principles as “astonishing” and stated that girls must be protected, not forced into compulsory marriage. According to her, child marriage anywhere in the world violates human rights and cannot be justified.

The Taliban Ministry of Justice announced about two weeks ago that these principles were published in the official gazette following approval by Hibatullah Akhundzada. This 31-article document regulates matters such as the dissolution of marriage, custody, and conditions related to child marriage—a subject that has sparked widespread global reactions.

In the ongoing wave of criticism, Miral Hussein, a Muslim MP in the UK Parliament, called the document a “law of child rape” and said the Taliban have officially legitimized child marriage through this action. Nearly 100 human rights organizations have also warned in a joint statement that these principles disregard the fundamental rights of women and girls in Afghanistan and must be revoked immediately.

Despite this pressure, the Taliban continue to defend the principles. Zabiullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, dismissed human rights objections as “insignificant” and stated that these criticisms contradict Islamic rulings and should not be given attention.

Pakistani Senator Sherry Rehman has sharply criticized the Taliban’s newly issued principles on “separation of spouses,” stating that legalizing child marriage is a “completely shocking” move. By reposting remarks from Hema Falconer, the UK Foreign Office Minister, she emphasized that child marriage constitutes a blatant violation of fundamental human rights.
