British special envoy calls for Taliban accountability after crackdown on protesters in Herat

Lindsay, in a note on X on Tuesday, called for de-escalation of tensions, respect for freedom of expression, and holding accountable those responsible for any harm and unlawful actions.


This comes as protests by citizens of Herat over the detention of women turned violent, leading to the arrest, killing, and wounding of dozens of protesters.

Richard Lindsay, the United Kingdom's Special Representative for Afghanistan, has stated in response to the crackdown on protests over the detention of women in Herat that he is deeply concerned about reports of the use of force in the streets of Herat.
