Nasir Ahmad Fayeq: The human rights situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate

In his remarks, Faiq pointed to the detention of women by the Taliban's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice forces due to their attire, and said that the group has also used weapons against protesters.


He further stated that following these incidents, pressure on human rights activists has intensified, with cases of interrogation, detention, and imprisonment—particularly in Herat province—escalating.


According to Afghanistan's representative, the Taliban's policies are systematically and gradually aimed at eliminating women from various spheres of social life. He added that the group's leaders have imposed new restrictions on the use of mobile phones and established greater control over telecommunications networks to limit the flow of information and communication.


While welcoming sections of the Security Council resolution that emphasize ending human rights violations, Faiq said that achieving peace and sustainable development cannot be attained by sidelining a portion of the population.


He stressed that UNAMA must be able to continue its mission in Afghanistan without hindrance or pressure and fulfill its role in supporting the people of this country.


Afghanistan's representative also described the presence and activities of terrorist groups within the country as a serious threat to Afghan citizens and regional security, warning of its consequences.


Faiq urged UNAMA to continue its activities with impartiality and commitment, and to support initiatives that lead to peace, stability, and improved living conditions for the people of Afghanistan.


In conclusion, he said that the people of Afghanistan are in one of the most difficult periods of their contemporary history and continue to view UNAMA as a symbol of hope and support from the international community. In his view, greater attention to human rights, women's participation, and countering terrorism must be prioritized in international efforts.

Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan's representative to the United Nations, welcomed the extension of the one-year mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) during the Security Council meeting, stating that this decision was made at a time when the human rights situation in the country continues to deteriorate.
