“Accountability, not normalization.” Tolerance calls for legal action against Taliban

The organization stated on Monday on the social network X that these four countries committed two years ago to hold the Taliban accountable for the widespread violation of women's rights under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women; however, according to Ravandari, normalization of relations with the Taliban has now taken the place of practical actions.

Ravandari has deemed this situation unacceptable in the face of what it calls the "worst women's crisis in the world" and has urged these countries to resume their action processes and provide more information and transparency regarding the judicial pursuit of women's rights violations based on this convention.

Germany, Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands had jointly warned in the year 1403 [2024] that if the widespread violation of human rights continued, particularly the violation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, they would bring the Taliban before the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The United Nations and more than 20 countries had also supported this action. These four countries had stated that if the situation of women and girls did not change within a reasonable period, the legal arbitration process would first be initiated, and in the final stage, the case would be referred to the International Court of Justice.

The launch of this campaign coincides with the ongoing restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women and girls in Afghanistan. Since returning to power in Asad 1400 [August 2021], the Taliban have imposed extensive restrictions on women's education, work, social presence, and individual freedoms. Human rights activists warn that normalizing relations with the Taliban without regard to the situation of women and girls could undermine efforts for justice and accountability in the face of human rights violations.

The human rights organization "Ravandari" has launched the "Accountability, Not Normalization" campaign, calling on Germany, Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands to fulfill their commitment to hold the Taliban accountable for violations of the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
