UN Human Rights Council condemns bloody crackdown on protesters in Iran

This resolution, proposed at the initiative of more than 20 countries, was approved on Friday with 25 votes in favor against 7 against. Under its terms, the mandate of the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission to investigate events in Iran has been extended for another two years, and the reporting duties of the Special Rapporteur on human rights in the country will continue for another year.


The text of this resolution, focusing on recent developments related to the nationwide protests, expresses serious concern over the killing of a large number of civilian citizens, particularly women and children. It also points to the wounding of thousands and the widespread arbitrary detention and imprisonment of protesters.


Meanwhile, Mai Sato, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, has stated that the death toll from the nationwide protests may reach more than twenty thousand; a figure that has further heightened concerns about the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the country.

The United Nations Human Rights Council, in a special session, adopted a new resolution describing the human rights situation in Iran as deeply alarming and strongly condemning the violent crackdown on popular protests.
