Richard Bennett: Normalizing the oppression of women and girls in the country is unacceptable

Mr. Bennett, on Thursday, September 17, warned in a message on the social network X that the continuation of these restrictions, beyond their profound impact on the lives and mental health of girls, will have severe consequences for Afghanistan's future. He said that the normalization of a government that systematically oppresses and abuses women and girls is unacceptable.


The UN Special Rapporteur went on to emphasize that depriving girls of education is not only unacceptable but shocking, and it may constitute a crime against humanity. He called on the Taliban to open the doors of schools to girls and provide them with access to education through a comprehensive curriculum. Bennett also urged the international community to stand alongside Afghan girls in supporting them.


At the same time as these remarks, women's rights and education advocacy organizations have released an image titled "1826 Days Without School." This title has become a symbol of the five years of deprivation faced by millions of Afghan girls from education. After returning to power, the Taliban reopened schools on September 18, 2021, which had previously been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, girls above the sixth grade were not allowed to return to school.


Following that, the restrictions extended to universities as well, and women and girls faced further bans and limitations in education, work, and social participation. Over the past five years, the United Nations, special rapporteurs on human rights, international organizations, and various governments have repeatedly called on the Taliban to lift the ban on girls' education; however, these requests have not been accepted by the Taliban to date.



Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan, on the fifth anniversary of the ban on girls' education beyond the sixth grade, has stated that a generation of Afghan girls has lost their entire secondary education. He described Afghanistan as the only country in the world where half of its population is deprived of secondary education and higher learning.
