White House Orders US Military to Focus on 'Blockade' of Venezuelan Oil

The report also stated that Washington is currently more interested than ever in using economic tools to put pressure on Caracas.


The official said on Wednesday, December 24: "While military options remain available, the primary focus in the first step is on using economic pressure through the implementation of sanctions to achieve the outcome the White House is seeking."


This comes as Donald Trump, President of the United States, had previously asked Nicolás Maduro, President of Venezuela, to leave his country. Trump said on Monday that it would be wise for Maduro to step down from power.


The official added: "The actions taken so far have put tremendous pressure on Maduro, and there is a belief that by late January, Venezuela will face an economic disaster unless it agrees with the United States to offer significant concessions."

Reuters news agency, quoting an American official, reported that the White House has ordered U.S. military forces to focus almost entirely, at least for the next two months, on implementing the "blockade" of Venezuelan oil.
