Intimidation spreads; Taliban publicly flog 36 people in Khost

The court stated in a press release on Monday, 6 Dalwa (February 26, 2024), that these individuals were punished in public for charges including the purchase and sale of narcotics, extramarital relations, and illicit relationships.


According to the court, these individuals received between 10 and 39 lashes and were also sentenced to one to two years of suspended imprisonment.


The Taliban's Supreme Court had previously announced on Friday, 3 Dalwa (February 23, 2024), that courts under its authority across the country had flogged at least 31 people over the past week on various charges.


Human rights organizations and international bodies have condemned the implementation of corporal punishments and the public torture of defendants as violations of human dignity and have called for their cessation; however, the Taliban has disregarded these criticisms and emphasized the enforcement of sentences based on what it calls "Islamic Sharia."


In the absence of independent judicial institutions and mechanisms, the Taliban routinely announces the implementation of corporal punishments against citizens. Human rights organizations state that the Taliban's judicial system lacks standard criteria, and defendants are denied their fundamental rights, including access to defense counsel and a fair trial.

The Taliban's Supreme Court announced that at least 36 individuals have been publicly flogged in Khost on various charges.
