Sources close to him say the attack occurred near Suri's residence in Vali-e Asr Town and he passed away en route to the hospital.


Suri was previously the police commander of Baghlan and Takhar provinces, and after the fall of the previous government, like many of Afghanistan's military commanders, he sought refuge in Iran. He was one of the well-known anti-Taliban figures and even after the fall maintained close ties with the security forces of the previous government in Iran.


This is the second former Afghan military commander to be killed in Iran. Previously, Ma'ruf Ghulami, a political and military figure close to Ismail Khan, was shot at his office in Mashhad on September 22. Ghulami, head of the "Jihadi Commanders' Council of Western Afghanistan," played a key role in anti-Taliban battles in the west of the country and after the fall of Herat had fled to Mashhad along with a group of other commanders.


The police of the Islamic Republic of Iran have not yet commented on this matter.


These events indicate that even in exile, Afghanistan's former military commanders are not safe from threats, and their security in neighboring countries is a matter of serious concern.

Reliable sources confirm that Ikrām al-Dīn Suri, former police commander of Afghanistan, was shot on the evening of Wednesday, January 3, in Tehran and lost his life.
