UN: More than 17 million people in Afghanistan face severe food insecurity

The agency warned on Wednesday, 17th of Saratan [June 7], that despite the continuation of humanitarian assistance, millions of people across Afghanistan continue to grapple with severe shortages of food and difficulties in meeting their basic living needs.


OCHA stated in a note that emergency food assistance has played a vital role for many vulnerable families in Afghanistan, helping them to sustain their lives.


The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs had previously reported that only 17 percent of the funding required to implement humanitarian programs in Afghanistan has been secured to date.


Meanwhile, the European Union's humanitarian aid department has also announced that Afghanistan is confronting a severe hunger crisis. The agency emphasized that the closure of borders, disruptions to supply chains, and the worsening economic and livelihood conditions of the population are the primary factors exacerbating this crisis nationwide.


The hunger crisis in Afghanistan is intensifying even as border tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan have escalated into clashes over the past months, with repeated closures of border crossings hampering the transport of essential goods into the country.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Afghanistan has announced that an estimated 17.4 million people in the country are projected to face acute food insecurity this calendar year.
